VACATION? I ONLY TAKE WORKATIONS - 14 SIGNS YOU'RE A WORKAHOLIC

MARCH 28, 2018

While being a workaholic may seem like a good (or at least useful) thing on the surface, over an extended period of time, it may cause you to burn out faster than you can say KMN.

I mean, who doesn’t love a hard worker? After all, that’s what we’ve been told time and time again is one of the keys to scaling up in your career – right? But just how much is too much work?

So the big question is, are you a workaholic? Can you even tell?

Let’s look at some of the evidence.

1. You’re told that when you sleep-talk, you mumble incessantly about next quarter’s strategies, your scheduled meetings for the week, or that client that won’t stop emailing you. Or... you have to be forced to sleep.

2. You can’t tell the difference between your office desk and your kitchen table – or maybe even your bed.

3. You sometimes cry for no reason.

4. In the extremely rare occasion that you go out with friends, their faces turn into “The Scream” by Edvard Munch.

5. When something (or someone) stops you from working, you become stressed out, agitated, and lash out.

6. You always have a full stack of meds on hand because you feel physically ill often.

7. You also can't live without coffee.

8. First in the office, last one out. Every time.

9. “Lunch? What’s that? Oh, you mean that one-hour break where you eat? Yeah, no. I don’t do that.”

10. Packed inside your bag for a vacation is your laptop, paperwork that needs encoding, your long list of to do’s, and so on. You may as well have just packed your office for your trip. Or you may as well not have gone at all. For you, it’s never a vacation. It’s a “workation”.

11. You find yourself always saying “no” to friends and family and “yes” to your boss or colleagues.

12. When you’re not at work, you’re at home working. When you’re not at home working, you’re staring into space twiddling your fingers because you don’t have any other hobbies or interests outside of work.

13. Breakfast on your desk… lunch on your desk… dinner on your desk…

14. Last of course is denial, denial, denial. Everyone points out but you still can’t accept it. You find yourself saying, “I’m not a workaholic” more times than you can count on your fingers and toes, on a weekly (or worse, daily) basis.

Can you relate? Then it’s time to take a step back, friend.

The thing about letting work invade every aspect of your life and your thoughts 24/7, is that you’ll burn out – guaranteed. You’ll end up sick, unhappy, and underproductive. All that overtime work you’ve done would just end up wasted because at some point, it will all come crashing down. Then you’ll feel bad about it and do even more work to make up for it.

It’s a vicious cycle.

You need to draw a line somewhere. So if you want to know how to end the cycle of workaholism, come back soon and read about how to unplug from work. We'll help you through it!
