Knowledge and Experience:

  • Working knowledge of XML, XSLT 2.0, XQuery, XPATH 2.0, Schematron are required.
  • Understanding of Ant, Java, CSS, SQL, UNIX are highly desirable.
  • Experience in working in SVN, Git, or other centralized version control system.
  • Excellent standard of English – both spoken and written.
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent and ideally have publishing or typesetting experience.
  • Must have good computer skills and attention to detail.

Job Description

Working under the guidance of the Content Systems Product Owner and XML Team Lead, the holder shall ensure that the quality of incoming XML content conforms to well-defined standards and shall develop scripts for validating, handling and transforming XML content.

This role is focused on maximizing the potential of Cambridge content in a fluid business and technological environment, so good general knowledge of the publishing industry and solid knowledge of XML, XSLT, XQuery and Scripting tools, are required. The holder is expected to have substantive experience and understanding of the purpose and usage of Content Management Systems within an enterprise environment in the publishing sector.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Develop and maintain scripts for preparing Book and Journal content for ingest onto online platforms, including Cambridge Core.
  • Develop and maintain scripts for transforming Book and Journal content from XML into HTML within the Cambridge Core platform.
  • Develop and maintain scripts for creating XML exports according to models required by third parties.
  • Develop and maintain scripts for converting Book XML content into ePub and Mobi.
  • Test modifications and fixes in an appropriate development environment.
  • Develop new functionality and the maintenance and extension of existing XSLT/XQuery processing within the Cambridge Asset Management Systems (CAMS).
  • Routine checking of incoming book XML deliveries; identify and feedback errors to in-house staff and external service providers.
  • Identify issues with book and journals markup schemas, documentation and automatic QA checks and contribute to the development and implementation of improvements and updates.
  • Maintain clear visibility of all development work by regularly updating ticket management software (JIRA) and creating reports when required.
  • Prepare and update documentation related to the workflows and processes.
  • Help monitor and manage the work and progress of other XML Developers.
  • Delegate tasks to other developers, if necessary and manage new projects assigned to the team.
  • Provide guidance, coaching and training to enable new team members to meet/exceed team’s expectations.
  • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Stay up to date with new XML technologies and share how to incorporate new trends to other developers and the whole team.
  • Improves team operations by recommending changes in procedures or processes.
  • Communicate clearly and collaborate effectively with colleagues and other technology teams within Manila office.
  • Assist XML Architects in planning and creating standards for the project when needed.
  • Responsible for planning, processing and performing work in an efficient manner with no assistance from the team lead.
  • Responsible with code writing based on agreed framework and architecture.
  • Responding promptly and professionally to bug reports.
  • Provide assistance to QA as needed to determine system problems.
  • Review and improvise legacy code if needed.
  • Assist management with hiring processes of the new team members by preparing technical exams and conducting technical interviews when needed.
